My initial exposure to research was in the lab of Reidar F. Sognnaes, Professor of Oral Pathology and graduate of the University of Bergen, Norway. He taught me to do histochemistry of the cementum and alveolar bone, culminating in my first paper. Lorber, M. Anatomical Record 111, 129-154, 1951. He left HSDM to become the founding dean of the U.C.L.A. School of Dentistry. He also duplicated George Washington's dentures. After the originals were stolen, his version has been on display at the Smithsonian.
